Ive heard the same thing about grapes. Use the stems and all just make sure its washed.

Using a glass to mash the fruit sounds like you’re asking for trouble. Use a plastic cup or a clean wooden block.
you can use damaged fruit – the riper the better – that is an old wive’s tale. Use the ripest fruit and smoe unripe fruit for a bite added to the taste. Roll Tide!
